What are we doing here?

I am not referring to the eternal question about our purpose in life. I am referring to all of us who are here on the internet, writing blogs.

I feel there are several different reasons why people choose to blog. Some of us come here to voice our opinions and views on current news and world events. Some of us use blogs as a (non)personal diary to record daily events that occur in our lives, using words and/or pictures.

For some of us, blogging is an excellent medium to try our hand at writing. We are all budding writer-wanna-bees and blogging provides a natural transition to express our thoughts into the written word.

We all have our reasons or combination of reasons for blogging.

Blogs definitely provide us with an outlet and an opportunity to express our inner feelings: our joys or sorrows, our political and personal views, our anger and frustrations, and our achievements and successes. Sometimes, it is easy to pour these out, and sometimes we struggle to find the right words.

Blogs allow us to show others how the world appears from our viewpoint. It not only provides the platform, but also the audience.

And that's the key. We blog for an audience. Let’s be honest about this, would you write stuff on the internet that you don’t want anyone else to read?

Most of us are well-aware of who is reading or may read our blogs, and we probably each have our set of ground-rules that we follow around what we will and will not express out here. Sometimes, we cross these boundaries when something we feel about strongly comes up and touches us.

And audiences are great influencers. We invariably keep them in the back of our minds when we begin a new post. We are intrigued by the fact that there is a world out there who may be reading what we have to say. After all, they are the ones who consume what we produce. Their anticipation of a new post is what makes us continue to write.

Whatever be the reason for our blogs, one thing is for sure. It offers a unique window for readers to take a look inside the mind of the author and see them through their writing. The blog reflects the author's personality, their views, their assumptions and their attitudes.

And it is natural for readers to form opinions about the author. And to offer comments.

Blogging is a two-way street. It needs the writer as much as it needs the reader. And what is ironic is that they are both the same people. Us.

agree....
it also blurs boundaries as anyone can speak to anyone - which is not possible sometimes when you are in school or college - as people get intimidated by each other or are shy....

happy blogging

I feel something amiss if I haven't blog for a day. There's always a huge blog in my mind at all times. Sometimes, it gets the benifit of being written down. Sometimes, it does'nt. Whatever it is, it sures makes me think, observe more on things I earlier take for granted.

Hail! Bloggers

@ceedy - I dont think boundaries are blurred .. i feel they are replaced by new ones.

@deepali - agree with me and you ??? surprising :)

@romila - I think many of us can identify with those feelings. Blogging does that to people!

I think its a combination of all of these. Each post is written with a different motivation in mind. I had done a presentation of types of bloggers and their motivations, there is no line in between. We are social beings who want to find ways of connecting to someone else. on a personal level.

Inside our hands, outside our hearts said...

You have a wonderful mind. This post should make everyone think and then smile knowing someone has noticed.

Lovely.

@mansi - You are right on the mark about us being social creatures that always crave company and connections.

So true... we blog for an audience - n that includes our ownselves n others!

I like to write but i feel am not good enuf for a book or articles in the newspaper...n so i chose to blog!
Also, blogs help us look back at our own past in a different way!it makes us realize how much we have evloved as persons!

Having said that there are never enough words to express certain emotions! Its hard to express in any form some feelings!

Cosmic,

I don't know about the 'blogging-for-an-audience' statement. I understand that on some level we all want to be heard, and we want our opinions to go as far as they can.

But I have been blogging for nearly two years and the more I blog, the more it makes me wonder WHO I'm writing for- myself or my audience. I don't believe I like that thought at all.

And the more I think about it, the more I am tempted to open up another space, anonymously. And then it won't matter if I am read or not, because I want that to be a place where only I can go and vent. Sometimes I find it hard to say things on my blog because so many people know who I am and what I am about.

I know this is ultra-confusing, but please ask me if you don't understand because I sound quite muddled! :)

@pavi - Thanks for your comments and being a regular visitor :)

@quaint murmur - The reason I said we blog for an audience is that if we didnt want to do that, we would have kept our blogs private. The fact that we have it open for others to read and comment upon means that in all probability, we are interested in what others have to say about what we shared.

At the same time, there will be others out there who find blogging in public too 'public' and prefer a secret/anonymous blog that only they maintain, sort of like a personal diary for their own eyes only.

And then, maybe some of us flip-flop between these two ..

As for your comments, a lil bit of clarification would help :)

Cosmic,

I think you got the drift anyhow.

'maybe some of us flip-flop between these two .'

I didn't start blogging to share, really. When people started reading QM, I felt good about it, but now I'm beginning to doubt whether I blog for myself or them. And if I blog only for the audience, I won't like it too much. You know what I mean?

Cosmic Joy said...

@QM - Yes .. I get it now. Its no different from real life though. We are supposed to live for ourselves .. but do we always do that? :)

cosmic just a question - though i agree about setting boundries as you know who might end up on the post...but why will some one set boundries when he is not bloging with real identity...in which case the idea itself is, not to reveal self so that one can talk innerself...so where does that come in play here???

Cosmic Joy said...

@PK - Inner feelings and outer personality are intertwined. It is not always easy or straightforward to keep the two separate. The only way is to set boundaries and limits to what one can write even when one is anonymous.

well said, all of it. :)
